Bhutan’s National Digital Identity says it has integrated with Ethereum. State broadcaster BBS reports a full migration is planned by early next year. The platform moved from Hyperledger Indy to Polygon in August 2024. Law The National Digital Identity Act of 2023 governs the program. The law is technology-neutral, so infrastructure can change without affecting citizens’ legal standing. Tech NDI uses self-sovereign identity and decentralized identifiers. In SSI, people hold verifiable credentials in a wallet; blockchains store small proofs, not personal data. Ethereum’s Virtual Machine (EVM) runs the smart contracts that record these proofs. Polygon remains the last confirmed operational chain from 2024. Details of the planned full move are not yet on the NDI site. [Inference] Context Sovereign ID on a major public chain is rare. If migration completes, Bhutan becomes a leading SSI case on Ethereum. That could boost EVM interoperability and raise security scrutiny.
