Coinbase CEO Says Nearly Half of Company’s Code Is Now Written by AI

Coinbase CEO Says Nearly Half of Company’s Code Is Now Written by AI

Coinbase is embracing artificial intelligence at an unprecedented pace. CEO Brian Armstrong revealed on Wednesday that more than 40% of the company’s code is now generated by AI, and he expects that figure to reach 50% within a month. “Obviously it needs to be reviewed and understood, and not all areas of the business can use AI-generated code. But we should be using it responsibly as much as we possibly can,” Armstrong wrote on X. He also shared a chart showing that the percentage of AI-generated code at Coinbase has more than doubled since April. The remarks come shortly after Coinbase announced plans to transform its workforce into “AI-Natives,” underscoring that it does not intend to replace its 4,200 employees with automation but rather equip them to work more efficiently with AI. AI Reshaping Engineering Culture Armstrong has been vocal about pushing engineers to embrace AI tools such as Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor, which are now widely used across Coinbase’s engineering teams. He said the shift has allowed individual engineers to refactor, upgrade, and build new codebases in days—tasks that would have previously taken months. The CEO has also taken a tough stance against employees resistant to change. In a recent podcast appearance, Armstrong revealed he dismissed engineers who could not provide valid reasons for avoiding AI after he posted a company-wide mandate on Slack requiring its adoption. Despite concerns that AI will replace human jobs , Coinbase’s strategy suggests the opposite. The company sees AI as a way to streamline operations, improve productivity, and accelerate innovation rather than cut headcount. Coinbase Continues Hiring Coinbase is actively expanding its workforce even as much of the crypto sector remains cautious about hiring. According to its careers page, the firm has around 350 job openings, nearly half of which are engineering-related. Of those, 93 are back-end engineering roles, many of which explicitly mention AI in the job description. Customer experience roles account for the largest share of non-technical positions, with 56 openings currently listed. Although large-scale layoffs in crypto have slowed , recruiters note that hiring conditions remain tighter than in previous years. Some attribute this to AI drawing talent and investment away from traditional roles. Coinbase appears to be positioning itself at the forefront of the shift, betting that deep integration of AI will give it a lasting competitive edge.
